Learn About Facelift
Request ConsultationAging is multifaceted, especially when it comes to the many layers of tissue in the face. Although the traditional facelift can rejuvenate the face, a more in-depth approach is sometimes needed for best results. Dr. David Gilpin is Nashville’s premier facelift expert and can ensure a natural, refreshed look with the SMAS facelift.
What is a SMAS Facelift?
SMAS stands for Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System. This type of facelift addresses the SMAS layer of the face, or the fibrous network of connective tissues that supports the skin. Traditionally, a facelift surgeon performs the type of facelift that they learn in training. The SMAS technique is the most widely taught technique for facelift surgery and therefore the most widely used technique. Due to the fact that the deep plane facelift technique typically provides the most long-lasting results surgeons have worked to combine these two techniques into the facelifts they perform. The majority of surgeons evolve their techniques with modern surgical advancements over the duration of their career. At this point in time, the Deep Plane Facelift is by far the most popular and least taught in training due to the complex skill it requires to perform. Only a handful of surgeons learn this technique in training. Modern techniques such as the SMAS facelift provide natural results in the right hands. This technique resuspends the SMAS layer and the skin on top of it, rejuvenating the face at the SMAS layer. It is important that whatever type of facelift your surgeon performs leaves you with a natural looking result. Every surgeon has their own technique, some perform a combo SMAS/deep plane facelift some only a deep plane, which also includes treatment of the SMAS layer of skin. performs on the SMAS layer of skin.

How is the SMAS Facelift Different From the Deep Plane Facelift?
The SMAS facelift only goes skin deep – sagging occurs not just in the skin, but in the deeper tissues as well. This is often the underlying cause of aging and isn’t always adequately addressed during a SMAS only facelift. You can think of the SMAS facelift as a more surface-level procedure, whereas the Deep Plane Facelift recreates a youthful facial structure from the bottom up. By lifting and resuspending the fat pads and deeper tissues, we can reverse the effects of gravity to recapture the way your face looked when you were younger.
